Blog 2: I am overweight why can I not get weight loss injections on the NHS?
You might hear in the news soon that weight loss injections can be prescribed by your GP from June 2025.
We were so excited to be able to help our patients in this way. But whilst this is true, the criteria to qualify for patients, for us to prescribed is very strict.
The eligibility criteria is:
- Your BMI must be above 40. You can check your BMI here if you know your height and weight. We will check your height and weight at your appointment, so it must be accurate.
- As well as a BMI over 40, you must have a confirmed diagnosis of at least four out of the following five health conditions:
- Hypertension (high blood pressure) needing medication
- Sleep apnoea (confirmed at a sleep clinic)
- Type 2 diabetes
- Cardiovascular disease (heart disease, vascular disease or stroke)
- Hypercholesterolaemia (high cholesterol)

If you don’t meet all of these criteria, your GP will not be able to prescribe you Mounjaro for weight loss under the current guidelines.
Please don’t book an appointment about Mounjaro if you do not meet the criteria.
We share many of our patients disappointment and we are sorry we can not prescribe for all that are motivated and want to loose weight.
There are other ways to loose weight. We can help by referring patients for exercise at our local gyms or by self referral for weight loss management plans.
If you’re living with obesity or weight-related health issues, we understand that the journey can be emotional, frustrating, and difficult. The NHS website also has advice on making changes to your lifestyle to help you lose weight.
